Do You Need a Tent Permit in Frisco, McKinney, Prosper or Celina?
Renting a tent for a backyard party, graduation or wedding in North Texas? The size of the tent can decide whether your city wants a permit. In the four cities we deliver to most, the line sits in the same place: 400 square feet.
This guide sums up what each city's own permit documents say. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the city office listed before your event.
The Quick Answer
In Frisco, McKinney, Prosper and Celina, a tent of about 400 square feet or more generally needs a permit. A 20x20 frame tent sits right on that line, and anything bigger, like a 20x30 or 20x40, is over it. Small canopies like a 10x10 or 10x20 are well under it.
Tent Sizes and Square Footage
| Tent Size | Square Feet | Compared With 400 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| 10x10 canopy | 100 | Well under |
| 10x20 frame tent | 200 | Under |
| 15x15 canopy | 225 | Under |
| 20x20 frame or pole tent | 400 | On the line |
| 20x30 frame tent | 600 | Over |
| 20x40 frame or pole tent | 800 | Over |
Frisco
The City of Frisco's special event permit page lists tents of 400 square feet or more among the things that need a permit. Tent questions go to Frisco Building Inspections. The page also warns that applications submitted less than 30 days before the event date may be denied. If your event is a private party at home, call Building Inspections to confirm whether the rule applies to you.
McKinney
The McKinney Fire Marshal's Office tent guidance says a permit is needed before installing a tent of 400 square feet or more, or a food tent of any size. The application asks for a flame-resistance certificate for the tent fabric (NFPA 701), a site plan and the seating layout.
Prosper
The Town of Prosper's temporary structure application requires a permit for a tent over 400 square feet. Tents open on all sides can be exempt if each one is 700 square feet or less and sits at least 12 feet from buildings and other tents. Applications go to the Prosper Fire Marshal's Office.
Celina
Celina's tent permit guide requires a permit for all tents of 400 square feet and above, and for open structures of 700 square feet and above. The Celina Fire Prevention Division reviews the plans, and the fire department inspects the tent before it is used.
What Your City May Ask For
- A site plan showing where the tent sits, with distances to the house, fences and any other tents
- A flame-resistance certificate for the tent fabric
- Your seating or table layout inside the tent
- Your event dates, plus setup and teardown times
How to Plan Around a Permit
Pick your tent size early. Match the tent to your guest count first with our tent size guide, then check it against the 400 square foot line.
Start early. Frisco warns that applications filed less than 30 days out may be denied, so reserve the tent first and apply soon after.
Plan more than one tent with care. Prosper sets spacing rules between tents, so mention every tent when you call the city.
Ask about paperwork when you book. Tell us your city and that you need permit paperwork, and we'll tell you what we can provide.
